Pain and death and terror ...
Oct. 23rd, 2006 11:26 am... in other words, it's another Fairbanks winter, and business as usual.
We were so ready for it. Studded tires on the car, all set and ready for the 2 or 3 inches of snow we got on Saturday ... but then Orion found a dangerous-looking bulge in the sidewall of one of the tires. I'm certainly glad he noticed it, though it's frustrating considering that the tires were bought in fall of '04, so they should still have a couple of good winters left in 'em.
Anyway, we slithered in to work this morning in the truck with its slightly threadbare summer tires. OH. MY. GOD. It took us 45 minutes to do a drive that normally takes 15, and we were sliding all over the road even in 4 wheel drive. I'm *still* tense and nervous.
