Aug. 25th, 2004 11:02 amI think my very favorite thing about my new home (if that's possible) is the view from the living room window. It looks out into the ravine where the creek is. "Ravine" is probably too grand a word for a rift that's only about 30 feet deep (on the far side; more like 10-15 feet for the much lower bluff on this side) but the cool thing is, it LOOKS like a ravine or a canyon. You see the ground drop away and then this wall of birch-tree-covered cliffside rises in front of you. It's just like being in the mountains, except it's not really all that tall.
Tonight I've been thinking about morality, being your own person, and stuff like that. What got me thinking about it was the Alaska primary election, which was yesterday. This year's campaigns for U.S. Senate was hideously nasty, with the major party candidates trashing each other. As a result, I voted for the independent candidate. :D
I realized tonight that I've been doing more stuff like that lately. Like not shopping at Wal-Mart just to save $10, but instead spending my money at a small business. Or if a business screws me over, speaking out about it to their potential customers rather than worrying about repercussions. The older I get, the more important it seems to become to me -- to live my life that way: using my buying dollar, my vote or my voice to support what I believe in, rather than doing what's easy or cheap or worrying what people will think of me.
Corporate America IS the way it is because people put up with it rather than rock their boats. We wouldn't have these nasty mud-slinging elections if the voting populace would just act en-masse and vote for the candidate who didn't do that nasty stuff, rather than voting for the guy who's got the biggest pork barrel.
