*fret* So at last update the Chatanika fire was 30 miles from the house we're buying. Now it's 20 miles away and still closing fast. The highway is closed at the Steese/Elliot junction (which is between Fairbanks and the house) so we had to cancel the appraisal -- it was scheduled for today -- because nobody can get through.

Hopefully there will be something left to appraise, when all this is over.

I'm not in Fairbanks at present -- I'm staying with family in Wasilla -- but from what I hear, the air quality up there is a nightmare. Their air quality meters are literally off the scale -- there's more particulates in the air than the instruments can detect (they measure up to something like 100 times the usual amount). It was bad when I was up on Monday, like driving in heavy fog. Apparently it's even worse now.

I guess I'll find out how bad it is firsthand in just a few hours. A friend of mine is getting married this weekend in Fairbanks so I'm driving up there tomorrow. Or, that's the general plan, anyway. I haven't been able to get in touch with them to find out if all plans are still on. If it was me, I'd be halfway tempted to cancel. Who wants to get married in pea-soup smoke? I haven't figured out what I'm going to do about a place to stay. I was just going to sleep in my car, but with the air quality so awful, I don't know if that's a good idea. But the campgrounds are apparently all turning into refugee camps for people forced out of their homes by the fire, and I can hardly ask somebody in the throes of wedding preparations if I can crash at their place.
