Today is the Alaska state primary election, and that flushing sound you hear ...

... is the sound of our illustrious Frank Murkowski's re-election chances going down the toilet.

Ah, Frank Murkowski, the man with the second-lowest approval rating of any governor in the country. (The only one who's doing worse is Bob Taft of Ohio, who has, let's see, admitted to assorted ethics violations and become synonymous with corruption in office.) Frank Murkowski, the man who appointed his own daughter to succeed him in the U.S. Senate. The man who convinced the legislature to buy him a jet last year with taxpayer money, and has been using it this year to fly around the state doing his re-election campaigning for free, under the guise of performing official gubernatorial business. The man who brokered a semi-secret deal with the oil companies and then sent out glossy full-color brochures promoting said deal, paid for again with taxpayer money. The man who fires people in the government who disagree with him, tries to prevent reporters who ask him tough questions from attending his press conferences, and so forth.

With about half the precincts reporting, he's currently pulling a laughable 18% of the vote. The REPUBLICAN vote. 80% of the Republicans in the state are voting against the INCUMBENT Republican governor.

Hahahahaha! Karma's a bitch, isn't it, Frank?

And people thought the tip away from Lieberman was a big deal?

I mean it is, but what's up, Alaska?!

In most places, local politics seem to be so much more interesting than national politics. At the very least, more colorful. The people are just so odd, and their little power plays are so blatant and futile and funny. My husband describes Alaska as "a banana republic, without the bananas."

One down...

Now if y'all can only get rid of Unka Ted...

He can't live FOREVER, can he? The man's got to be something like 85 by now.

Seriously. Get to work on that guy already. He pisses me off to no end. Kinda like that bridge that seemingly has no end he's gonna have.

It's kind of depressing when even people who don't live in your state a) know who your Senator is, and b) hate him, with reason. Sigh.

As much as I can't wait to see them out, though, it's going to be a trifle disturbing to me when our Congressional delegation changes. Alaska has had the same three since I've been alive. Literally. And I was born in the mid-70s! (Okay, yes, Murkowski retired, but since his daughter is in there now, we still have Stevens-Murkowski-Young just like we have for my entire life.)

I think we need fresh blood. Soon.

Ahahahahaha! I got a republican ballot just so I could vote against him. (Registered non-partisan)

Ha! Me too! First time I've ever voted the Repub ballot since they went to a closed primary. I have to wonder how many other people did that ...
