A view of Fairbanks the Chamber of Commerce doesn't want you to see
Lately the thought occurred to Orion and myself that it might be interesting to take some pictures on our drive home from work of some of the houses and other interesting things that we pass. (By and large, this is the *scenic* route home -- going home via the old highway. It's a lot more interesting than the new highway, which is basically just a freeway.)

Every time we'd drive by this place, I used to wonder what the hell they were doing. Building a house around a trailer? That's certainly what it looks like. Or, rather, considering the weathered nature of the roof frame, it looks like they started to build a house around the trailer and then ran out of money after about the first $200 they poured into the project.
However, then they tore down the roof and ... well, scattered a bunch of trash around it, basically ...

...and now it looks like this.

This is an old ambulance ... with a plow on it.

As Orion said, "I think that's a residential bus."

And this is a residential plane -- or so I've heard. Rumor around town has it that this plane, which sits just off the Old Steese Highway in a swamp, is currently being refitted for living in.

THAT is a second-story mobile home. I believe it's sitting on top of another one. Not as uncommon as you might think.

Another angle on the 2nd-story trailer from the "new" highway.

This is basically just ... typical Fox, really.

We drive by this house on our way to the dump. It's kinda ... exactly what it looks like; the yard is solid trash, about four or five feet high, and although you can't see it in the picture, there are winding little trails through the trash leading to the door of the trailer and so forth. We've seen the owner at the dump occasionally, taking another load home. It's really quite cool.

We couldn't get a good angle on this one, but the boxcars are forming a fence around the rest of the property. The best part is that this is right across the street from the Turtle Club, one of the more classy and expensive restaurants in Fairbanks.

What this is NOW is some kind of garage or something. What it used to be is a very good question. It's as big as a warehouse (note the trees around it -- those are smallish trees, but they're still TREES), and I can't imagine why anyone would make a barrel that big, or what you'd put in it.
Now that the weather is nice and it's fun to get outside with a camera and risk getting shot by overzealous property owners, stay tuned for more fun with creative Fairbanks architecture ...
