More spring, snow, dogs, etc.
Well, I promised that I'd go back to the light-hearted entries about spring and dogs and Alaska, so here you go!
The following pictures are from wandering around the gravel pit area at about 10:30 at night ... which gives you some idea of how late the light is already lasting at this time of year. In another month, it won't get dark at all ...
Because the creek is still ice-locked, the water appears to be backing up through the gravel and filtering into the gravel pit -- producing quite a respectable flow through the middle of the gravel pit itself.

Taking pictures towards the sunset produced an especially nice effect ...

It was entertaining throwing sticks into the water and trying to trick Lucky into retrieving them. Lucky is that amusing rarity, a retriever who doesn't know he can swim. He's afraid of any water deeper than his knees.

I was intrigued by the vivid red color of this shrub in the gravel pit. Yes, it really is that color.
After that we walked up the road ...

Pretty, eh? It wasn't really this dark, though the sun had slipped beneath the hill. My digital camera tends to overcorrect images with a lot of contrast, so I can usually either get good pictures of the sky, with the land a dark blob, or good pictures of the land with the sky a washed-out mess. However, in some cases it produces a nice effect.

And then we walked back into winter when we got to the creek, which still has about 6-8 feet of solid ice on top of it. The water is sort of percolating up through it.

"Hello, my name is Lucky, and I'll be your dog today ..."

I took about a million pictures of the pussy willows against the sky. They're in that phase where they're starting to pollenate, so the little gray tufts are covered with long red and yellow filaments. Very beautiful. Very hard to get good pictures with the digital camera, though.

And finally, yet another sunset picture from the yard.
