Tired
Back in Fairbanks ... barely. I feel like I dodged a bullet in Kodiak by mere inches. My 6:30 flight ended up being delayed again, and we finally got off the ground at about 7:20. An hour later, Mt. Augustine blew (again) and all flights were grounded in the area. I came THISCLOSE to not making it out of Kodiak, and Kodiak flights are STILL grounded due to ash, so I would still been there. I think my flight was the only one that took off all day. Lucky, eh?
Unfortunately I have a sinking fear that my co-worker was probably not so lucky, because after the flight cancellations in the afternoon we got booked on separate flights, and his flight was later than mine. I am not sure if it made it out, because I took off straight from the airport with my brother and didn't go ahead and check -- I didn't know about the Augustine eruption until the next morning. I still can't believe that I made it off the island an hour before the volcano erupted. I mean, obviously, it's not life-threatening in any way, just kind of annoying -- but considering how worried I was about getting trapped on the island for days by ash, it's truly bizarre that it actually happened that way ... except that it missed me (barely).
Missing the afternoon in Anchorage threw my whole weekend schedule out of whack, and I felt like I spent the rest of the time just playing catch-up and trying to get everything done in Anchorage that I wanted/needed to do. Didn't exactly manage it. But I did get to visit a bit with my brother and my grandma, so that's good anyhow ...
Pictures from Kodiak forthcoming in the next couple of days.
