The cat ate my headphones

Little bastard chewed right through them in several places. Now I have to listen to music out loud. I really prefer listening to it with the headphones on. And I liked that pair; they were comfortable. *glares at cat*

It's kind of funny that we never had any chewing problems with the puppies -- Lucky chewed up one of the feet of the table, but that's about it. The CAT, on the other hand, chews on everything. He loves cords and cables of all kinds. He's gonna electrocute himself some day if he's not careful, but I can't imagine how to make him stop, because punishing doesn't seem to work.

Well, he's got an appointment to get neutered on Monday, so TAKE THAT, CAT! Mwahahaha! That'll teach you to chew things!

I don't know why I've been having so much trouble getting work done this week. I've managed to color one page (Thursday's) and pencil another, and that's it. It's not so much that I don't WANT to work ... it's just ... it's taking me forever to accomplish anything. The Thursday page took three nights to color. I really don't know why. I'm SLOOOWWWW. And it's cold. The weather forecast said it could hit -25 tonight. Right now it's -15. The dogs don't want to go for walks, so Lucky's got all this pent-up energy on top of everything else.

Yeah, getting neutered usually takes the stuffing out of the little buggers for a few days:) I hate to tell you this -but it took a couple of years for Murphy to chill out (he would climb the curtains and push all of my stuff off the kitchen table on a regular basis. Cats...)
The cold weather we are having is slowing me down a bit. I don't really have a routine way of dealing with it yet. Every day is "hmm real cold out...what do I need to do first, next, and after that?" -getting to work on time is a challenge. Heh.

Tonight I watched Orion work some really amazing headphone training mojo on the little guy, though. He'd dangle the [broken] headphones in front of the kitten, and pet him, and then when the cat would reach for the headphones, WHOMP! Then, back to petting. After a few repetitions, the cat would just stare at the headphones and not even try to bat at them. You could almost see the gears turning in his flat little head. This could actually work. I think I'll be locking up my headphones when I'm not using them for a while though.

It may or may not help to say that as far as cold goes, this is really about as bad as it gets. The subjective difference between -10 and -50 is not nearly as huge as between 30 and -10. Once it hits "damn cold" it really doesn't get worse. It's basically like humid heat: once it starts getting hot in the summer, it doesn't matter if it's 90 or 115 -- it's DAMN HOT and you stay inside with a glass of iced tea, venturing outside only after the sun goes down or else with a beach towel and bottle of suntan lotion. Cold is pretty much the same way, only in reverse. Right now, it's to the point where you have to wear a warm coat and don't really want to breathe deeply when you're outside. It doesn't get much worse even when it's -40.

However, when it DOES hit the -50 range, the weird and fun physical effects start to occur. When this happens, you will need to take a pan of warm water outside and throw it into the air to see what happens. Or, for a lark, take a balloon outside and watch what happens to it. December in Fairbanks really sucks for the balloon-bouquet industry, for sure.

Perhaps get some lemon oil and dab it on cables and things that you don't want the cat to chew? Most cats have a strong dislike of citrus, but it won't actually hurt them if they do inadvertently ingest a bit.

Hm! One of my coworkers suggested mixing a few drops of lemon or orange oil in a spray bottle of water and using that to discourage the cat from getting into places where he shouldn't be. Perhaps I could do both.
