Meme!

I *never* do these, but this one looked fun. From [livejournal.com profile] jkcarrier:

1. On your current playlist, hit shuffle and pick the first twenty songs on the list (no matter how cheesy or embarrassing).
2. Write down a line of the song. Try to avoid putting the song title in the line.
3. Have your friends comment and see if they know the songs. (NO CHEATING!)
4. When someone guesses correctly, strike out the line and list the correct name of the song next to it. (Don't strike out the line until the song's ARTIST and NAME have both been guessed correctly!)

1. I won't disturb the slumber of feelings that have died "I Am a Rock" - Simon & Garfunkle
2. The only loss you could forsake, the only bluff you couldn't fake
3. The ice we skate is getting pretty thin "All Star" - Smashmouth
4. You shook your head just like a wild horse, beneath the southern cross in the frozen north
5. For once in my life, I need no conversation "Send Me No Wine" - Moody Blues
6. I've seen all the fuss, and it's no big deal "I Go Blind" - Hootie & the Blowfish
7. I wonder if I'm really with you now, or just chasing after some finer day "Anticipation" - Carly Simon
8. It's too late to ask questions, for you're much too old to take any suggestions
9. Threw sand in our eyes and descended like flies "Back on the Chain Gang" - The Pretenders
10. I met your children, what did you tell them "Video Killed the Radio Star" - The Buggles
11. I believe your parents did the best job they knew how to do "Affirmation" - Savage Garden
12. I'm just wondering why I feel so all alone
13. Catch your dreams before they slip away "Ruby Tuesday" - Rolling Stones
14. I've got the song of the voice inside me set to the rhythm of the wheel
15. Can't you hear your babies crying now?
16. When the madness stops, you will be alone "Break Me Shake Me" - Savage Garden
17. You don't know what it means to win "Never Going Back Again" - Fleetwood Mac
18. I dream at night, I can only see your face "Every Breath You Take" - The Police
19. See the signs and know their meaning
20. Don't keep the dream in you locked outside your door

11- Savage Garden, Affirmation?

[identity profile] senri.livejournal.com 2005-08-28 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
*face of glee* Omg yes! I have that CD.

[identity profile] laylalawlor.livejournal.com 2005-08-28 06:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I really like that song.

This is probably a big hint, but since no one's got it yet ... there's another song in the list that has something in common with that one.

1. "I Am A Rock" - Simon & Garfunkel
3. "All Star" - Smashmouth
9. "Back On The Chain Gang" - Pretenders

Right on all counts!

[identity profile] acoustic-rob.livejournal.com 2005-08-28 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Well, sure, I'll give it a whirl:

5: Stevie Wonder, "For Once in My Life" (Seems too obvious, though....)
18: The Police, "Every Breath You Take" (Pretty sure about this one)

[identity profile] laylalawlor.livejournal.com 2005-08-28 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
Right on the Police song, but not the other one. (I looked up the lyrics for the Stevie Wonder song just to make sure that particular lyrical combination doesn't occur, but it doesn't.) It's a rather obscur song; I don't know if anyone will get it.

[identity profile] acoustic-rob.livejournal.com 2005-08-30 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
Well, (5) was a bit of a guess anyway. You *did* say not to cheat, right?

[identity profile] laylalawlor.livejournal.com 2005-08-30 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
Well, let's face it, Google would make short work of this. But, say, reading liner notes isn't cheating.

The ones that nobody's gotten in a day or two (which I expect will be several) I'll go ahead and give away.

5. Moody Blues, "Send Me No Wine"
10. Buggles, "Video Killed the Radio Star"
17. Fleetwood Mac, "Never Going Back Again"

Right on all of them! :D

#6, "I Go Blind" by Hootie and the Blowfish.

Man, that line just KILLED me, I knew it from somewhere and wound up listening to half my Hootie songs trying to figure out which one it was in. :-)

#16, "Break Me Shake Me" by Savage Garden.

Woops, forgot to list my name under the guesses for 6 and 16. :)

Both are correct!

HINTS

[identity profile] laylalawlor.livejournal.com 2005-08-29 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Looks like about half of them have been correctly guessed; y'all are doing good. There are a couple fairly obscur songs on the list -- ones that I don't think have ever been released as singles. Most of the others are at least somewhat well-known, so here's another line or two (generally more recognizeable lines) from each remaining song.

2. You always won, every time you placed a bet
4. Endless flight has no direction now, to a coward's kiss or a hero's vow [note: I doubt if anyone will get this one if they don't have this album, so here's an additional hint: this is from a solo album by a 70s/80s singer who was perhaps better known as the front man for a band named after a town]
7. These are the good old days
8. All the sour words that you have spoken, about everybody else, will return to act upon yourself
[This is an even more obscur one, so here's a hint: It's by an early 90s indy rock band whose lead singer has gone on to have a solo career]
12. He's got a daughter he calls Easter
13. Who could hang a name on you
14. I could cry for the time I've wasted, but that's a waste of time and tears
[hint: it's a bluegrass-ish country song]
15. Mama, they try and break me
19. You'll know it's true, that you are blessed and lucky
20. You fear every step that you take, so sure that your heart will break

OK, I know some of these:

(7) Carly Simon, "Anticipation"
(13) Rolling Stones, "Ruby Tuesday"

I figured the more complete lyrics would help. :D

There's one of these that I can't believe nobody's gotten. It's a very well-known song -- at least, I think it is.

Darn it, I know I've heard nos. 14 and 19, I can even sing largish sections of 19, but I a) don't know the name of the song and b) don't know the artist, I've just heard it on the radio enough times to pick it up. Grrrr....

I'll post the answers in a day or two. Probably tomorrow.

Well, why don't you post some of the lyrics and maybe it'll spark someone's memory? I think it's about time we started to collaborate on this anyway, before Layla lowers the boom on us.

I'll contribute this: song (4) is probably by Peter Cetara (spelling?), one-time front man of Chicago who went solo in the '80s. Unless it isn't.

I'll also contribute this: I'll be kicking myself for not recognizing at least one of the songs that havn't already been guessed....

You are correct: Peter Cetera is the singer. But the song is not a well-known one.

The answers

[identity profile] laylalawlor.livejournal.com 2005-09-01 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
This was fun. ^_^ Thanks to everybody who participated. Here are ones that no one has guessed:

2. "Still the Same", Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band
4. "Dip Your Wings", Peter Cetera
8. "It's the Life", Grant Lee Buffalo
12. "Every Day is a Winding Road", Sheryl Crow
14. "Nothing I Can Do About It Now", Willie Nelson
15. "Hero of the Day", Metallica
19. "These are Days", 10,000 Maniacs
20. "Take This Heart", Richard Marx

Definitely a representative sampling of the ... occasional oddness of my musical tastes, I'd say.
