Layla's guide to laundry care tags

I'm doing laundry tonight. For those of us who don't have 20 hours a week to spend washing our work clothes ...

Hand wash only = set the machine to Cold Wash-Cold Rinse
Tumble dry low = tumble dry with other clothes on highest setting; it'll be fine
Dry clean only = throw it in the machine and see what happens
Dry flat = hang on radiators & turn over in the morning
Wash with like colors = nothing white -- all else is fair game

You can do ANYTHING to underwear. Wash it with jeans; wash it with red sweaters; dry it with fluffy towels; whatever. No one is going to see it but you and possibly someone who is probably not thinking thoughts like, "Wow, she must have washed her undies with the badly dyed purple shirt."

The only thing I don't put in the dryer are wool and chenille sweaters. Those go on the radiators. So far I haven't ruined anything, although one of the mohair sweaters is starting to look kind of rumply from repeated doses of radiator drying. I should probably block it tonight -- i.e. stretch it out flat.

I spent one summer working as a minimum-wage slave for Princess Tours -- 90-hour weeks and we only had 2 uniforms. One of my co-workers taught me a neat trick for getting wrinkles out of your uniform without ironing: hang up the clothes in the bathroom while you take your morning shower. The steam + gravity takes care of mild wrinkles.
