A house! I have a house!

I'm moved (well, mov-ING) into the new house. It's not entirely empty of the previous owners' stuff yet. They're supposed to finish cleaning it out this weekend. In the meantime, I've been moving into the downstairs, and have spent the last few nights out there.

I love it. The commute to work is only about 15-20 minutes -- even though the house is pretty much out in the sticks, it's right on the highway so it's a quick (and beautiful) drive into town.

I still don't have Internet access at home, although I discovered that it's possible to get DSL out there, so I'm on the list for that.

Pictures to come soon...

Last night I heard crunching gravel in the yard, like someone was driving or walking up the driveway. I looked out the bedroom window and there, only about 20 feet from the house, was a small moose (yearling or something) browsing on the willow bushes at the edge of the yard. By the time I scooted across the bed to get my camera, it had already wandered down the hill and out of sight. I could still hear it crashing around in the bushes until I fell asleep, though.

A useful reminder that it's probably every bit as unsafe to go out after dark here as it was in the bad neighborhood where we lived in Champaign. Only up here, it's moose and bears instead of muggers.

YAY! A House of your own, that is excellent! And honestly, I think I'd prefer the moose and bear to some of my current neighbors.

Rob here...

A good friend of mine grew up in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and told me the following moose story:

She came home from work one evening to find a small moose standing in the middle of her apartment complex's parking lot. She inched her car forward, and the moose walked a couple of steps...before she knew it, she'd ended up herding the moose into her parking space!

So what do you do when there's a moose that weighs more than your car standing in your parking space? You leave and drive around the block a few times. By the time she returned, the moose had wandered off.
