2011 Goals
In 2011, I'm not working (much) - I have a couple of freelance things lined up, and a part-time job at the moment will probably last for a month or two. But, mostly, 2011 is the year that I've resolved to make serious progress on making this published-novelist thing work out. (And I'd like to do a bit of Kismet on the side, also.)
Right now, I have two YA novels to revise, and I have a good start (~25,000 words) on a fantasy novel that I think has a real chance of being salable. So, rather than having daily/weekly word-count goals like I've done for the last two years, my goals for 2011 are more like a loose calendar schedule of what I'd like to accomplish. Which looks like this:
January-February: Write the fantasy novel (10,000 words/week). At the end of February, I hope to have a 100,000-word novel in hand.
March: Edit/revise/rewrite one of the two YA novels (whichever looks more intriguing to me at the time)
April: Edit the fantasy novel.
After calling in some markers with friends who offered to beta for me, I fully intend to start submitting these to agents. *crosses fingers, knocks on wood*
And after that? Well. I'm going to throw out some ideas here. Basically, right now there are three areas that I'd like to work on, but I don't think I can do all of them in the same year.
- Kismet: work on Sun-Cutter, get Hunter's Moon book up for sale in a POD edition.
- Novels: write another one, or possibly two.
- Short stories: write at least one per week, and make a serious stab at selling them to pro-level, paying markets.
I seriously doubt if I can do all of these. Which one(s) I focus on will, I guess, depend on how I feel at the end of April (or possibly May). And there are other factors to consider as well. I know I'm going to have a major freelance thing going in June/July, and Alaska's short summers tend to be a bad time to get things done in general, because that's when construction projects happen ... that's when family comes to visit ... that's when you go camping and hiking and generally get out of the house ... It's just not really a good time to expect to accomplish major indoors projects.
So I'll give myself some options. :)
By the end of 2011 I will have accomplished at least TWO (2) of the following:
- gotten enough Sun-Cutter pages done to be updating regularly again
- have the HM book available for sale
- finished at least one more novel
- revised the other YA novel
- sold at least one short story to a pro or semipro market, and have begun submitting stories regularly to various markets
2011, here I come!
