Another reason to wear a bike helmet

I love how, when Alaska makes the national headlines, it's always stuff like this.

Bear mauls teen during Anchorage bike race.

The bit that I found most memorable:

"Rick Sinnott, a wildlife biologist with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game ... said the girl was fortunate to be wearing a bike helmet because the bear had bitten her head."

See? YOUR MOTHER WAS RIGHT. Always bike with your helmet on, because you never know when a grizzly bear is going to try to bite your head off.

I really ought to start carrying a gun when I go on those long woods hikes with the dogs.

If I were you I'd carry a moose hunting rifle, on any hike in your part of the world.

It just feels so paranoid! I don't want to turn into "crazy gun-toting Alaska woman". But on the other hand, is it paranoia when they're really out to get you? *g*

See, but you have a *reason* to tote a gun. That doesn't make you crazy, that makes you *sane*. Bears could totally outrun you and the dogs, and I somehow doubt that your front door would really deter a really determined grizzly.

You know what a pacifist I am; I'd say any trip more than a few hundred yards out might merit at least a handgun.

'Course, that means you'dve had to've been packing when we went up to check out the abandoned sluice. In retrospect, if we'd run into a bear up there we'd have been comicker McNuggets.
