Good God

This is effing CRAZY.

Web cartoonist fired from government job and investigated by police for making gun joke in cartoon

I should note that the actual strip that got him fired -- this one -- is no more extreme along those lines ... actually, probably less so ... than some of my Freebird strips.

It's stuff like this that makes me think maybe having my real name on my LJ wouldn't be a good idea.

It is a weird balance to have to strike., to be sure. Proceed with caution.

Thinking about this, there are really two (totally conflicting) lessons that a person could get from it ... you could either try to hide your tracks better, or be totally above-board with it all, because it seems like when these things are most likely to happen is when a company or individual discovers after-the-fact that they've hired a "dangerous subversive". If they know you're a deviant from the get-go, then the initial hiring and firing is based on that...

I've been thinking about this when it comes to my online fannish activities, because I usually use a pseudonym for that, and I'm not sure if it's better to go on doing that (when it could possibly hurt me later if a publisher felt like I'd been hiding stuff from them) or just be completely above-board with it, and let it come out in a Google search if it's going to.

I think for professionals like you who use LJ to announce your work probably do better with real names. For cubicle monkeys like myself, I ensure no work related stuff at all goes into my LJ or other online accounts. This guy got caught in a position between the two of us.

I've heard about this, too!!! CRAZY!!!

That is just ridiculous. The sad part is this just gives more power to the real terrorists. Somewhere, someone is sitting in a cave quite satisfied to see our government slowing taking away freedoms. Can you say McCarthyism? Geez...

As I've said, slight anonymity through a "handle" does add that layer of cheesecloth, making things just a little more difficult for people to Google you up. Hey, then again, you can just buy one of the purged names LJ's selling now! ^^

Still, I gotta love the guy for his follow-up (http://threepanelsoul.com/view.php?date=2007-04-30) about the incident.
Comic strips and their artists rule.
