OMFG

The flashing bank sign across the street from where I work said 38F when I got off work tonight.

38! Degrees!

Our thermometer at home reads 31.

I mean ... it's December 8. "Normal" would be about -10 to -20. "Not unexpected" would be -40. 31? That's just friggin' weird.

Still think there's no such thing as global warming?

Normal Winter here

High 51, low 26. But we only have three seasons anyway (Spring, Summer, Autumn). Maybe the cold rainy months of Jan - Mar count as winter. No our indication of global warming are the hurricanes like Fran and Floyd (flooded coastal plains Carolina). My teenage boy dreams of the snows like you have (or at least his cousins in Michigan), but doesn't revel in the beach less than a half mile away. He does enjoy it when I drag him to play in the waves.

It's probably more accurate to say that the weather patterns are changing. We are definitely having warmer winters, overall, than 50 years ago ... warmer even than 10 years ago. The Arctic in general is really seeing the changes, much as the coastal areas are. The continental U.S. -- not so much, I think. It's a lot more stable.

Continental US is getting hotter summers, which is speeding up the desertification (or is it vice versa). It also keeps the hurricanes from hitting central US by having a nice high to bounce them off.

Only when I remember that you live in ALASKA does your comment make sense!

*laughs* Hey, when you're expecting -20, 38 *is* warm! It'd be like having it drop to -10 in Florida or something.

I know! I couldn't believe it when I heard NPR announcing the Fairbanks temperature this morning. Freaky
