Camped next to a stream with similar coloring (on island of Kaua'i... far from Alaska), but it was from naturally occurring tannic acid or some such. Safe to drink once we purified it, but it took a while to get used to the off color.

That there is still snow is mind boggling! In the Mid-Atlantic it's really pleasant, kind of warm, but not yet sticky.
