Kodiak

I'm going back to Kodiak at the end of the month (work related) and I checked the weather this morning to see what it's doing down there lately ... and discovered they're under a volcanic ashfall advisory at the moment. That's not a weather alert you see every day! That would be just my luck ... get grounded in Kodiak by a gigantic ash cloud ...

Volcanoes ... well, they're a fact of life up here, that's for sure. I've been through a couple of eruptions (I mean, in the ash cloud, not on the volcano, obviously) and honestly, they bother me a lot more than earthquakes, even though I imagine that statistically, you're a lot more likely to be injured or die in an earthquake. It's like fearing a plane crash more than an auto crash, even though the latter is far more likely ... earthquakes are (for me) a known quantity, and something I don't think about much, but there's just something terribly implacable about a volcano -- the sense that, if it's gonna get you, there's not a whole lot you can do about it.
