Looking back at 2005

It may be a little early for the retrospective stuff, which is traditionally done on New Year's, but it *is* the Solstice (well ... tomorrow) and that's a far older pivot point for the year than the arbitrary date of Dec. 31.

As far as my personal life goes, 2005 wasn't nearly the year of upheaval that '04 was (when I moved 4,000 miles, bought a house and started a new job, among other things). But as far as my comics go, it was perhaps the year of greatest change since 2000 (when I started Raven's Children) and 2002 (when I brought out the first RC graphic novel and started the Hunter's Moon webcomic). In 2005 I...

- started two new webcomics, Freebird and Midnight Sun. Freebird was later put on hiatus (which will probably continue through a large part of 2006 as well) but MS is going strong and I'm even trying to get it published.

- finished Raven's Children; well, at least brought it to a satisfactory stopping place, and brought out the second graphic novel, which got a very warm reception in pre-orders and is also my first (but not, I think, my last) foray into print-on-demand. I did, however, learn that postage to and from Alaska is a killer.

- left Girlamatic with Kismet: Hunter's Moon and moved it to Webcomicsnation. The separation from GAM was amicable and I still would like to do something else for them in the future, but in the meantime, being self-published (again) brought me out of a creative slump and made me excited to work on the comic again. I'm also gearing up for the end of HM (which I expect will happen sometime in '06) and making plans to collect it into a trade paperback.

Perhaps most importantly, after taking a couple of years off from doing conventions and going back to work full-time, I've had a break of sorts and I'm going into 2006 feeling, for lack of a better term, creatively refreshed. Dealing with comic-making as a business was very draining to me and I almost felt as if I crashed and burned somewhere around '03, when I just got to the point where I didn't want to deal with it anymore. Now I'm feeling exciting and energized, and ready to throw my hat back into the ring.
