Heaven help me...

Even though I still have my space reservation at SPX, I'm starting to have second thoughts. I've been looking into the logistics of getting there, and ... gads. The best I can get is a 12-hour, $700 plane flight. I had been halfway planning on driving down to Anchorage and flying from there, which shaves a couple hundred bucks off the flight, but with a very limited number of flights to choose from, adding a 7-hour drive to the whole mess means that getting there would be a 2-day trip either way. I'd have to take a week off work just to spend 2 days behind a convention table in Bethesda!

I'm starting to wonder if this is really worth it. I'd love to shmooze with everybody, but unless my sales are stratospheric, the actual number of books I'd sell wouldn't even begin to cover the cost of getting there. I can think of a lot of things I need that money for more than a 2-day non-vacation on the East Coast.

Wahhh.

wow. logisitics are NO FUN! :(

i guess that's one of the perks to living in a big city. constant, reasonably-priced flights to just about anywhere.

You're gonna make Virus cry. Is that what you want? A sobbing boothmonkey?

Seriously? Put up a tip jar. Sketches for cash. I'd pay $20 towards the Get Layla To SPX Fund.

I agree. If you can a) make enough to offset most of your plane fare and b) finagle it so you can spend some extra time on the Coast and make it a vacation, it might be worth it.

You and the hubby haven't had a vacation since you moved, right?

No one wants a sobbing boothmonkey less than I do, believe me!

Actually, now that I've picked my jaw up off the floor at the fares (I'd been figuring about $400, based on Anchorage ticket prices) it looks like I could do OK by taking the red-eye on Weds. eve and then staying through 'til Monday. The difference in fares between flying on a Wednesday vs. a Thursday or a Sunday vs. a Monday is really amazing.

The idea of doing a fundraiser honestly had not occurred to me. I still have several months to raise money ... hm...

I'd love to make it a vacation with Orion, but he can't -- as a university prof, he has summers off in return for basically being unable to take vacations between Sept. and May. It doesn't look very good to go back to work for three weeks after a 3-month break and then take off again!
