My inking hand is dead

Finished inking page 8 of the new RC issue tonight, bringing my total of inked pages for the day to 5. I'm, optimistically, hoping to keep it down to about 30 pages, which means that in only one week I've made it about a quarter of the way to the finish line. Of course, I still have to scan, clean up and letter those pages, and add gray tones if I want gray tones. I think I'm gonna keep the toning to a minimum on this one, both to save time and because I'm not really fond of the overly heavy grays in the last couple issues.

I'm somewhat amazed to discover how much I like doing this again. I missed these characters, and I missed doing art by hand -- most of the Kismet pages are basically a rough set of inks with 90% of the work done on the computer. There is something very satisfying for me about sitting down with hand tools and making a finished comics page with only my own two hands. These pages are a real multimedia extravaganza, too -- Crowquill, brush, brush-pen, Sharpie, Micron, white-out ... whatever's near at hand. I've even been able to use my bottle of ancient ink that dried into a peculiar jelly-like consistency; it's perfect for doing dry-brush work.

I can never remember the brands of art supplies that I like, so since I've stumbled onto a cheaper-than-Bristol paper that I really enjoy using, I'm writing it down here so I don't forget: Pentalic 110-lb ink paper. It was on sale at Ben Franklin Crafts for only about $6 for a 40-page pad. I should go back and see if it's still on sale tomorrow. Perhaps I'm just jaded, though; Kismet and some of Freebird was all done on ultra-cheap copy paper, and inking on heavier paper after a few months of using that stuff is like driving a Cadillac after struggling around town in a dying VW bug.

The last "Reckless" pages for awhile went up today. Tomorrow night I'll put up 3 pages of "Freebird" and then it, too, will be on hold until I finish RC or kill myself trying.

I can't face more inking tonight. I should go color Thursday's Kismet page, but instead, I think I'll goof off on the Internet for an hour or two and then go to bed.

It snowed lightly all day today. I hope it's not too difficult to make it to the highway in the morning. Work. Blech. I want to stay home and draw.
