Happy Thanksgiving – and a book giveaway!

Happy Thanksgiving, to those who celebrate. (Above: the shelf above my desk, all decked out in fire hazard fall regalia.)

In other news — FREE Freebird!

In honor of my upcoming week of book signings (and the holiday season), I’m giving away a signed copy of Freebird! I’d like to find more webcomics to read, so enter to win by posting a comment below, recommending a webcomic to me. Give me a link to it, and tell me briefly why you like it. I greatly prefer narrative comics (as opposed to single-strip gag comics), but regardless, if you think it’s cool and awesome, tell me about it — the more obscure the better. Just one per person, please! Pick your favorite. :D

If you don’t read webcomics or can’t think of one you’d like to recommend, you can still enter by recommending me a book you liked — again, the more obscure the better, to increase the chances that it’ll be something new to me.

And if you really can’t think of anything to recommend, just leave me a comment and I’ll enter you anyway. :)

ALSO! To be absolutely shameless about the self-promotion aspect of this, if you mention this contest on your own blog, LJ, Facebook page, etc, I’ll give you two slots in my random number table instead of just one. Twice the chance to win! (Just let me know that you did it, in order to get credit.)

Comments stay open ’til Wednesday night, Nov. 28 and I’ll randomly choose a winner on the 29th. (It doesn’t matter if you recommend something I already know about or didn’t like. You’re still in the contest. ;) )

And hey, if you see someone in the comments recommending something you like, feel free to chat about it!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Obscure webcomic, at least in English-language fannish spaces: Tower of God! It's a Korean webcomic. The Tower is a kind of arena full of different challenges that people climb in order to get to the top: myths says if you reach the top you get anything you want, but in the meantime people climb to get rank and fame and fortune. I really liked the first volume: it has interesting characters, a plot with a mystery, unlikely allies becoming friends, and a great showdown in the end. The worldbuilding is okay - I don't pay attention to all of the details, but I enjoy the non-human characters and the strangeness. I like the art, mostly because of the colors.
I don't like the second, currently-running volume as much because I find it hard to keep track of the huge cast of new characters and everything becomes more confusing, but I have hope it'll get better, and if it doesn't I'm still glad I read the first part.
Here's the link to the scanlation site I use: Tower of God at batoto.net .
I hope you enjoy it if you check it out!

Oooh! I have a webcomic to nominate! (And also I've actually been meaning to ask for a while - can I buy a copy of Freebird straight from you so that it would be signed? :D)

Anyway, webcomic! It's Nimona, and is about a teenage shapeshifter who decides she's going to be a minion to the not-terribly-evil Ballister Blackheart, and join him in fighting against his nemesis Sir Ambrosias Goldenloin and the Institute of Heroics. It's adorable, and I love the setting which is this blend of fantasy-medieval and futuristic-tech. I think you'd like it :)

Also also, are those real leaves in the photo? That looks gorgeous...

There's also Girls With Slingshots, which for me took a while to get into, but which I now love. In scope it's rather similar to Questionable Content except with less music-hipster-ness and more lesbians, about a group of friends just doing stuff. Oh, and there's also a talking cactus.

Thanks for recommending Nimona! Why is a story about a bloodthirsty evil villain sidekick so cute? :D
